CHAPTER 21
WHEN THEY RETURNED home from Dallas, Johnnyâs truck was parked in the driveway. Allieâs face grew hot. Johnny wasnât free just to drop in anymore. Didnât he know that?
She threw the truck into park and glimpsed Johnny sitting on the porch, shielding his eyes from the bright beams of the headlights. She asked Bitty to unbuckle a sleeping Sammy from his car seat and put him to bed, then she stepped out into the chilly night and marched up to Johnny.
When he saw her, he stood and opened his arms. âHey, liâl bit. Welcome home.â
âWhat do you think youâre doing?â she demanded.
âWell, I didnât think it would be a good idea to go in, so I just waited out here.â
âThatâs not what I meant,â she snapped. âI meant what are you doing here? At my house?â
âWhoa, there. I just came here to see my boy. And you, too, of course.â
âYeah? Well, when did you get here?â
âI donât know. About twenty minutes ago? Thirty? Why?â
Just as she suspected. âItâs almost ten oâclock and youâre telling me you came to see Sammy, who has an eight-thirty bedtime? Whoâs had an eight-thirty bedtime for almost three years now?â She stared at him, incredulous. âThatâs bullshit, Johnny. You didnât drive here to see your son, and you know it.â
He shrugged. âI wouldâve been here earlier, but you werenât answering my texts.â
Since Allieâd seen him last, sheâd received about fifty texts. All I miss yous and I love yous, and letâs work this out, but he hadnât mentioned Sammy once. That fact hadnât been lost on her then, and wasnât lost on her now.
After Bitty, Zoe, and Sammy were safely inside and had time to clear the foyer, Allie led Johnny into the house, but stopped him as he tried to walk into the living room.
âLook, we need to have a talk. A serious one,â he said. âIâve been thinking about things. A lot of things.â
âWhat things?â
His brown eyes held hers. âLetâs move in together,â he blurted out. âGet a place of our own. I want to give you and Sammy that. You guys deserve that.â
It was too little, way too late. She was done with Johnny as a boyfriend . . . or whatever it was that heâd been the last several years. Ending things with him had been the right thing to do. She only wished sheâd done it sooner.
Now he was just Sammyâs father. The only serious discussions they would need to have would be centered around Sammy and Sammy only.
Johnnyâs mouth spread into a smile. âSo what do you think? Wouldnât that be nice? A place of our own? A safer, calmer place for Sammy to live? Just think, having Sammy around weird kids like those little girls all the time canât be good, Allie.â
Anger flared in her belly. âWeird kids?â
A floorboard creaked. Allie turned and saw Zoe peeking from around the corner.
âIs everything okay?â Allie asked. âDo you need something?â
âSorry,â Zoe said. âI just wanted some water, but I didnât want to .
